Where is Jupiter?

I left a little after 8:30 this morning and it is a beautiful morning out. The sun was shining at dawn which is always a nice way to start the day. It’s warm out and I have high confidence that the vibes are high in the water right now.

I get to the beach and yes, I’d say that the vibes are very high right here. They are so high in fact that Jupiter rock is completely covered and not at all visible. This doesn’t happen often. Well, give things a few months and I’m sure we will see all 5 feet high of it again.

Surf is up a bit today. I see the surfers catch some head high waves as I walk to the water. At my usual spot, the waves are breaking close to shore due to the mid to high tide. I walk in and bend my knees to crouch into the face of an oncoming wave. I’m all wet now. Let’s go.

I swim north and the water feels so good. I look up from time to time and view the hills over Laguna and the end of Monarch point. There is a whole lot of blue water that sits between me and that point and I’m about to cover a pretty good bit of ground between now and the end of my swim.

When I get to the point in between Salt Creek and Strands, I pause and I see a truck carrying away a shipping container along the small service road that runs between the two beaches. Awwww. They are hauling away the jr. lifeguard gear. Well that’s kind of sad, but I am happy that I was here to say good bye. I look forward to seeing them again next year.

I settle into the swim. My heart seems to sync with the rhythm of the wakes that float by my field of vision looking out towards the horizon. All is well here. I can feel the expanded space all around me and that holds me here in this water. I watch the leaves of kelp drift beneath me and that belong to another life that is always here and yet connected to me now. In fact I think it remains connected even when I am on shore. I am connected by memory that will persist well into the next swim when I see it again.

I reach the northern most point of the swim and I look around as I wade in front of the Monarch Bay Beach Club. I place my face below the surface as I set off towards where I started. I notice that the top part of the water is full of small translucent fish - Corbina I think. They are everywhere. I’m pretty sure they like the warm water because that is when they seem to come out. Well I don’t know if “come out” is the right term. It’s not like they head here from shore, but they obviously come from somewhere.

On the way back as I finish up I notice that I am extremely close to the surfers as I cross in front of the Ritz. In fact several are further offshore than I am which tells me I should swim out a little further. Lots of fish right here just like there was up north. I’m pretty sure they are all over the water here right now and I just don’t see them while I am swimming because they typically avoid my splashing appendages.

I finish the swim and head for the stairs. I double check on Jupiter rock. Nope. Still not there.
