No Other Humans
I left at about 9:00 and it is shaping up to be a beautiful day here in Dana Point. Skies are mostly clear and the air is warm. Feels just a touch cooler than yesterday which is a relief.
Earlier in the morning, I walked my dog Ocean down the south trail to the shore. I know…I know…no dogs allowed but I promise she didn’t eat anyone. I was curious to see if there was any sand down there, because if there was then I would just walk to my swim. Well there was a little more sand but not nearly enough to make that entry appealing. So I drive to the northern stairs again. If I had more time, I’d be happy to just walk. One day. One day I will have more time. I really mean that.
I park and first gather all the trash in the back of my car that my son accumulated last night and dispose of it near the upper showers. Aren’t you happy I include these fascinating details? I walk down the stairs and look out onto the beautiful ocean. What a privilege it is to be here. The tide looks high. The guy who works out with the 30 pound hammers is taking a dip in the water. We chat for a little bit and agree that the water is pretty much perfect.
Surf is still super small and I get in the water and soon start to swim. The water feels great and today I head south. It feels so lonely out here - in a good way. There are no other humans and just the occasional bird. I see a cormorant fly right by me and some pelicans in the distance. I also spot some calico bass below the surface.
It seems like there is a real difference in the character of the water between inshore and further out past the surf. Inshore is cooler and cloudier and offshore is a little warmer and more clear. It is super nice. I mean really really nice.
I am thinking over the swim of this life I am trying to design for myself. I don’t want the stock, out of the box life that they serve you off the showroom floor. I want something custom made. I don’t necessarily know how all the details will come out. I am sure they will reveal themselves in time. I do have a pretty good idea how I want to feel and the kinds of things I want to feel around me. I want there to be love, I want there to be time, I want there to be an exchange of positive energy between me and the world around me. I want to help my kids achieve their dreams. I want to feel useful. I want some adventure.
I can feel these things in the sky above me and the cliffs beside me and the water beneath me. I peel back the layers of my skin so that I may better absorb these elements into the core of my being. I am aware that the water will not always feel this good. We really didn’t get a propper winter this last year and who knows what will come this year. It doesn’t matter though. Right now we have something that feels so wonderful and heavenly and I think I will allow myself the bliss of this moment because it is hard to imagine that I would prefer another.
