like a flower

like a flower
my heart opens
it rises up to face your warmth
extending petal by petal
a hibernating animal awakens
emerges from its cave
and stretches its limbs

i mistook dust and ash
for fertile soil
i mistook a cold, dark space
for my inheritance
i know better now

it’s all i can do to lean toward your light
until feeling returns
to my dead skin
